Conversion of a one-bedroom flat into a two-bedroom home with open-plan living

Fulham Apartment Reconfiguration and Extension

This project involved the comprehensive reconfiguration and refurbishment of a compact one-bedroom flat in Fulham, transforming it into a bright and efficient two-bedroom home with an open-plan living environment. The design focused on unlocking the spatial potential of the existing footprint through a careful internal reorganisation. By rationalising circulation and repositioning internal partitions, the layout was adapted to accommodate an additional bedroom while creating a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that forms the social heart of the home.

Natural light played a key role in the design strategy. The open-plan living space is positioned toward the rear, where large sliding doors and rooflights draw daylight deep into the interior, creating a sense of openness that contrasts with the compact footprint of the apartment. This connection to the external courtyard extends the perceived living space and enhances the quality of the main communal area.

A calm and cohesive material palette was developed to maximise the sense of space and warmth throughout the flat. Light timber cabinetry, soft neutral tones, and carefully detailed joinery create a contemporary yet timeless interior. Custom-built elements provide integrated storage solutions, allowing the compact plan to function efficiently without visual clutter. The kitchen is designed as a central architectural element within the open-plan space, featuring a timber island that anchors the room while maintaining clear sightlines across the living and dining areas. Integrated joinery throughout the apartment provides continuity between spaces and reinforces the overall architectural language.
